Hill walking

Hill walking group

A great personal and group challenge, routes are selected specific to the aims and aspirations of the group and explore the wonderful local upland environments. Participants will be encouraged to take ownership of the day, being involved with route selection, personal and group responsibility and leading the group. Navigational skills and a greater awareness towards the local outdoor environment will be developed on the hill.

Purpose

  • To get to the top! To achieve a summit (or agreed group goal, dependant on abilities and conditions) as part of a journey
  • Personal and group challenge, development of group awareness and group dynamics
  • To undertake an activity in an unfamiliar or new environment

Outcomes

  • Personal and group responsibility
  • Greater awareness for, and respect toward, the upland environment

Initial exercises will develop map reading, navigation and decision making skills leading on to a fun competition working in small groups.

 

 
Purpose

  • To develop map-reading skills
  • To introduce the forest as an outdoor environment
  • To develop confidence through successful decision making

  • Understanding of orientation, scale and distance, spatial awareness
  • Involvement in making judgements and decisions
  • Introduction to an accessible lifetime activity/sport

Rock climbing and abseiling
Rock Climbing

A great introduction to this exciting sport, using our onsite artificial wall and local outdoor crags. Participants will be taught ropework and safety skills and will then operate in small groups to maximise development of climbing and movement techniques. Abseiling involves using ropes to descend a rock face and can either be incorporated in to a climbing session or ran as a separate activity.

Purpose

  • To introduce and/or develop techniques relating to movement over rock and safety in the activity
  • To provide an educational experience with small groups sharing responsibility for each other
  • To develop self-confidence and trust in others

Outcomes

  • Sense of achievement and overcoming challenge
  • Shared responsibility, trust in peers and safety awareness
  • Foundation for a leisure activity

Gorge scrambling

An exciting and challenging activity, the group works together to navigate through a gorge involving scrambling and climbing (expect to get wet!).

 

Purpose

  • To develop techniques relating to movement over rock in new and challenging environments
  • To provide an educational experience with an emphasis on ‘apparent danger’
  • To promote group members sharing responsibility for each other’s safety

Outcomes

  • Sense of achievement and overcoming challenge
  • Perseverance, commitment and coping with the unexpected
  • Shared responsibility, trust in peers and safety awareness

Canoing

Working in a small team per boat (2 or 3) participants will quickly get out on the water under their own steam. Progressive exercises ensure students pick up the skills rapidly with ample time for fun, games and journeying.

Paddling their own kayak students will quickly gain skills and confidence in this fun sport. A great way of getting out on the water in your own craft under the watchful eye of the instructor. Skill development, fun and games will be the main focus of the session.

Purpose

  • Personal challenge together with responsibility for self and others
  • Working either individually or in a small team.
    Means of journeying safely, being self sufficient and self propelled
  • To acquire a series of progressive skills, building confidence and personal ability

  • Sense of achievement and meeting challenge

  • Increased understanding of water environments

Working in small groups, fun tasks and problem solving exercises are used to explore and review elements of teamwork.

 

 

Purpose

  • Personal challenge
  • To enhance skills and factors inherent in successful teamwork
  • Group/shared responsibility requiring problem solving and co-operation
  • Practical application of team, management & leadership models

Outcomes

  • Sense of achievement and meeting challenge
  • Building both team and self esteem
  • ‘Real life’ consequences for planning, co-operation, communication etc.
